The Roku mobile app is designed by Roku Inc. to turn any mobile device into a remote control for the Roku streaming player or Roku TV.

You might wonder why would you need a remote control app if there is always a Bluetooth controller available. But what if it doesn't quite fit the bill or just got lost? You will still need to manage your Roku TV somehow. And this is when the Roku app comes in. It provides you not just with regular menu controls, but with more options like searching for content, transferring compatible music and video files from your phone to the player, channel scrolling and way more. All of the app’s functions makes the Roku app a must for any Roku owner. Let’s talk about them more detailed.

Functionality 5/5

The Roku app provides you with easy access to any Roku content and makes searching so fast and simple. With this app, you can check what’s on in just a few seconds. Find anything with only one keyword, title or actor and check where you can watch it for free or purchase. The app also has a Voice Search option so you can just speak up what you’re looking for and get the result immediately.

The Roku app has all the same buttons as a regular Roku remote like Play/Pause, Forward/Back, Instant Replay and Option. So you can control your Roku Player or Roku Streaming Stick from any compatible mobile device. With the Play On Roku function, you can quickly transfer any music, photos, and videos from your phone or tablet right to the TV and watch slideshows and movies on a big screen. Moreover, with the Roku app, you will always have something to watch because there is a “What’s On” tab that selects for you all the most top blockbusters and epic TV shows. The Roku platform has more than 200 content sources, so it will provide you with lots of options to choose from. The app also lets you add the channels you like to your favorite list, create "private channels" if the store ones aren't enough for you.

Design 4/5

The Roku mobile app has a nice and user-friendly interface that makes the app’s key features like Roku Search, Feed, Remote Control and Play on Roku easy accessible. When you open the app, you will see an intuitive home page with a beautiful design that looks similar to the Roku Home Screen. It also shows all the Roku Feed’s updates so you always know what’s new and it lets you access Voice Search or turn on the Play on Roku feature in just a few taps. You can instantly open your favorite channels or display any photos and videos from your phone on the big screen and much more. There is another helpful feature named “Pinch to zoom” that allows you to zoom in any detail on your photo or video. So you will likely use this function if you have 4K photos and create even new screenshots.

Usability 4.5/5

Downloading the Roku app is pretty simple, but using it is even more simple. To launch the app and start using it you just need to connect your phone or tablet to your Roku device via the same wireless network. You will also need to login to your Roku account or create one if you don’t have it. Don't forget about the compatibility of your phone and Roku device because certain features might not work properly.

As I mentioned before, the Roku app has an extremely useful feature - Voice Search. It’s also activated on the remote itself. This feature helps you to find anything quite fast and easy. Any movies, TV shows, actor or director, just say what you need and you will see it on a screen in front of you. The Roku app will also show you where to find it and for what price. You can search content from Netflix, Vudu, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu, Crackle and others as long as you have the working Roku app.

If you’re using the Roku app, you will never get bored because it is a huge content platform and has a solid selection of services to offer via the Roku Channel Store.
